Invisalign FAQs
Read the answers to our most frequently asked questions.
-
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a series of clear, custom-fitted aligners that straighten your teeth without metal wires or brackets.
Using advanced 3D computer imaging technology during the consultation process, we will develop a treatment plan tailored to your unique smile.
A series of custom clear aligners will be manufactured to fit your teeth precisely during each stage of the Invisalign treatment process.
-
How does the Invisalign process work?
Invisalign clear plastic aligners are designed to gradually move your teeth in small increments as your treatment progresses. You will wear each aligner for a specific number of days before replacing it with the next one in the series.
This process will continue until your teeth are in their desired positions. The duration of your Invisalign treatment will be determined by your dentist based on your specific needs.
-
How long does Invisalign treatment take?
Your dentist will evaluate the length of your Invisalign treatment according to your individual needs.
Factors that may determine the duration of your treatment include the misalignment of your teeth or jaw, the shape of your bite, and the amount of movement required to correct the problem.
-
What are Invisalign aligners made of?
The Invisalign aligners are made from USP Class VI medical-grade, high molecular weight polyurethane resins and are BPA free.
-
How often do I have to visit the dentist?
Since Invisalign aligners require no adjustments or tightening – you just switch to a new set of aligners as outlined by your dentist – your dentist will schedule brief appointments with you approximately every 4 to 6 weeks as needed.
During these appointments, your dentist will review your progress and overall oral health, address your questions, and modify your treatment as necessary.
-
What are the primary features of Invisalign?
The features of Invisalign include:
- A discreet, low-profile appearance
- Smooth construction for enhanced comfort
- No adjustment appointments needed
- Removable for eating, brushing and flossing
-
How much does Invisalign cost?
Cost will depend on the severity of your case and the duration of your treatment. For instance, the more severe the malocclusion, the more aligners you will need and the higher your treatment costs will be.
In many cases, the cost of Invisalign is comparable to that of traditional orthodontic treatment (braces).
-
How will Invisalign fit my lifestyle?
Invisalign may fit comfortably into your daily life.
You will take your aligners out whenever you need to eat, drink, brush and floss. That means there are no additional dietary restrictions, and you will be able to brush and floss thoroughly and consistently.
-
Are there any food or drink restrictions?
Invisalign aligners are removable, meaning you can take them out to eat. As a result, there are no additional dietary restrictions when it comes to Invisalign, so you can continue to eat all the foods you love!
To prevent staining your clear aligners and potentially harming your teeth, we suggest removing the aligners while consuming any beverages other than plain water.
-
How many sets of aligners will I need?
The answer to this question really depends on how severe your misalignment is.
Your dentist can give you an accurate estimate of how many aligners you will need based on a careful evaluation of your tooth position during an initial consultation.
-
Can adults use Invisalign?
Yes! Anyone who has healthy teeth and gums is a potential candidate for Invisalign.
More adults are choosing to undergo orthodontic treatment these days, primarily because options like Invisalign are now available.
-
Can teenagers use Invisalign?
Yes! Teens can certainly be candidates for Invisalign. In fact, Invisalign has created a line of aligners to meet the unique needs of teenagers.
Invisalign Teen aligners feature compliance indicators (small blue dots that fade away after the aligners have been worn enough) to assist teens in adhering to their treatment schedule.
They also come with eruption tabs that provide space for second molars and help prevent them from growing in crooked.
-
How often do I have to change my Invisalign aligners?
Most patients change to their next set of aligners approximately every two weeks. Your dentist will inform you about the exact frequency for switching out your aligners.
-
How do I clean my aligners?
Here are five simple steps to care for your aligners:
- Rinse your aligners each time you remove them to help wash away dry saliva and plaque that can contribute to dental decay and bad breath.
- Soak your aligners as needed with denture cleaner, Retainer Brite, and/or the official Invisalign cleaning crystals.
- Brush and floss your teeth before you put your aligners back in. Good oral hygiene is key to maintaining healthy teeth and helping to avoid cavities/decay. Failing to brush and floss properly can trap food debris and bacteria between your teeth and the aligners, increasing your risk of dental problems and bad breath.
- Clean your aligners with a clear antibacterial soap. Clear anti-bacterial soap is an excellent and inexpensive way to keep your aligners clear, fresh, and free from harmful bacteria.
- Gently brush your aligners to avoid scratching them, and then rinse off the soap. After that, you're done!
-
Can I play sports with Invisalign?
Invisalign aligners are removable, allowing you to play sports without worrying about damaging them.
However, keep in mind that Invisalign aligners must be kept in for a minimum of 22 hours a day, so plan your time carefully.
It is also recommended that you invest in a sports mouthguard to protect your teeth, as orthodontic treatment can cause your teeth to loosen slightly while shifting into their new positions, making them more susceptible to damage.
-
Can I play my instrument with Invisalign?
Absolutely! Just take out your aligners when you need to play your instrument, and put them back in once you're finished.
-
How do I store my aligners?
Your Invisalign aligners include a case for safe storage when not in use. As they are made of plastic, avoid exposing them to high temperatures to prevent deformation or melting.
